The William Larue Weller expression stands as the premier wheated bourbon in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC), celebrated for its raw intensity and historical significance. The brand honors the legacy of its namesake, a 19th-century distiller who is widely credited as the first to pioneer the "wheated" bourbon recipe. By replacing the traditional secondary rye grain with wheat, Weller created a softer, sweeter flavor profile that eventually laid the foundation for the legendary Stitzel-Weller Distillery and brands like Pappy Van Winkle.
While a wheated bourbon was part of the original BTAC lineup in 2000—then known as W.L. Weller 19-Year-Old—the brand as it is recognized today made its official debut in 2005. This relaunch shifted the expression to a barrel-proof, uncut, and unfiltered format, setting it apart from its lower-proof predecessors. Since then, the release has typically aged for approximately 12 years, though it has fluctuated between 10 and 15 years depending on the vintage.
Because it is bottled straight from the barrel, each annual release varies in strength, often reaching proofs between 125 and 140. This high proof amplifies its signature profile of caramel, toasted oak, and dark fruits, frequently accompanied by a dense, chewy mouthfeel. Today, William Larue Weller is consistently among the highest-rated whiskeys in the world, serving as a powerful tribute to the man who redefined the mash bill of American whiskey.
