Woodford Reserve Historic Barrel Entry is a 90.4 Proof (45.2% ABV) bourbon that explores the technical impact of a lower barrel entry proof. Produced at the Woodford Reserve Distillery, this expression was barreled at 100 proof, mirroring the standard practices of the 19th century, rather than the modern 125 proof entry. The mash bill follows the traditional 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley.
Maturation occurred in new charred American white oak barrels within heat-cycled stone warehouses. The lower entry proof allowed for a different chemical interaction with the wood, specifically targeting a higher concentration of water-soluble wood sugars. The resulting profile is characterized by a creamy structural framework, featuring a nose of toasted almond and vanilla bean, with a palate of dark chocolate, hazelnut, and baking spices that concludes in a long, oak-sweet finish.
