The 2008 growing season tested Napa Valley with spring frost and drought, shrinking the crop and concentrating what remained. It was a year that rewarded rigorous sorting and steady nerves, and Vineyard 29 had both. At the winery's Aida Estate in St. Helena, those small, thick-skinned berries produced a Cabernet of unusual density and savory character, one that critic Robert Parker rated 93 points and memorably called Graves-like in its earthy bearing.
The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, raised for 20 months in roughly three-quarters new French oak. Winemakers Philippe Melka and Keith Emerson leaned into the year's savory intensity rather than polishing it away. That elevage frames a bold, muscular wine of dark currant and blackberry laced with chocolate, camphor, warm embers and spice, a profile that set the 2008 apart from sleeker vintages of this bottling.
Nearly two decades on, and cradled in magnum, the wine has arrived at a fascinating stage: the tannins have melted into the fruit, and secondary notes of cigar box, cedar, dried fig and forest floor now share the stage. The 1.5L format's slower evolution means this bottle retains more freshness than standard bottles of the same age. It is a rare pleasure to taste a modern Napa Cabernet at genuine maturity.
Stand the magnum upright the day before serving, then decant gently off any sediment about thirty minutes ahead, and reach for a wide-bowled glass that lets the tertiary aromatics unfold. Pour it with dry-aged beef, lamb shoulder or hard alpine cheeses, and drink it over the coming several years while its mature complexity remains at full song.
