Very Olde St. Nick Lost Barrel 17 Year Old is a vintage allocation bottled by Preservation Distillery (Bardstown, KY) that represents a "tanked" capsule of Kentucky history. Distilled in late 1981 or early 1982 at the now-shuttered Stitzel-Weller Distillery, this wheated bourbon was removed from its charred American oak barrels in 1998â1999 to halt maturation and prevent over-oaking. For over two decades, the liquid was preserved in stainless steel vatsâa process known as "tanking"âwhich suspended the spirit at its peak 17-year maturity while paying annual taxes on the dormant stock.
Sourced by brand founder Marci Palatella, who famously secured iconic stocks from Julian Van Winkle III and others in the 1980s, this "Lost Barrel" release captures the concentrated, resinous profile of 1980s-era Stitzel-Weller. The resulting spirit is exceptionally dark and viscous, exhibiting the "dusty" funk of leather, tobacco, and black cherry syrup that collectors associate with pre-modern production methods.
