Released for the 2018 Lunar New Year, The Macallan Limited Edition Year of the Dog is a commemorative twin set: two 700ml bottles of Double Cask 12 Year Old dressed in special livery for the zodiac year. Labels and presentation box carry an illustration of a golden dog standing before Easter Elchies House, the distillery's spiritual home, set against a red ground chosen for luck and prosperity.
Zodiac editions have become one of the most actively collected corners of modern whisky, and this set was among the earliest in the distillery's Chinese New Year programme, produced in a limited run and quickly absorbed by gift-givers across Asia and beyond. Complete sealed pairs in their original packaging have grown steadily harder to find as opened examples leave the pool.
Inside the commemorative dress is the familiar 43% ABV Double Cask liquid: twelve years and more in a combination of sherry-seasoned American oak and sherry-seasoned European oak, married to balance the vanilla-and-honey sweetness of one wood against the dried fruit and spice of the other. Expect butterscotch, baked apple, candied citrus, light ginger and a clean oak-spice finish in the glass.
Because the set pairs everyday drinkability with genuine scarcity, it suits two temperaments at once: open one bottle for the celebration it was made for and keep its twin pristine, or preserve the pair intact as a zodiac-series cornerstone alongside later Year of the Pig and Year of the Rat editions.
