Sazerac 18 Year Old 2017 90 Proof is a technical continuation of the 1998 distillation lot, produced in-house at Buffalo Trace Distillery (DSP-KY-113). This spirit represents the second installment of the three-year batching strategy where the 18-year-old rye was transferred into stainless steel tanks to arrest maturation and ensure profile consistency across the 2016, 2017, and 2018 releases.
Prior to tanking, the barrels underwent 18 years of primary maturation in new charred American white oak, experiencing an extreme 72.1% evaporation loss that concentrated the liquid into a high-viscosity structural framework. Because it is widely understood that these releases utilize modern Buffalo Trace distillate, the profile offers a distinct departure from earlier Bernheim stocks, emphasizing a refined, "polished" character defined by notes of dark plum, seasoned oak, and a lingering, dry herbal spice.
