The 2012 Saxum Vineyards James Berry Vineyard magnum is the estate wine of the Smith family and the bottling that made Saxum famous. James Berry Vineyard sits ten miles from the Pacific at an average elevation of 1,200 feet, its shallow clay loam draped over an ancient seabed still studded with fossilized shells and sharks' teeth. Justin Smith grew up on this property among his father's vines, and Saxum remains, at its core, the story of that single hillside.
Unlike the Syrah-driven Booker, this cuvee is built on Grenache, which contributes its red-fruited core, with a large measure of Mataro for texture and Syrah playing spicy support. Aging runs 24 to 36 months across a deliberate mix of vessels: concrete tank and large puncheons for the Grenache, smaller French barrels, many new, for the Mataro and Syrah. The goal is texture: each vessel type contributes a different register, and the final blend knits them into one seamless voice.
The pedigree here is hard to overstate. The 2007 James Berry Vineyard was named Wine Spectator's number one wine of 2010, vaulting Justin Smith and Paso Robles onto the world stage. The warm 2012 vintage plays to the site's strengths, delivering raspberry and blackberry fruit wreathed in Provencal herbs, with dense, smooth tannins and a saline mineral echo.
Bottled unfined and unfiltered after its long rest on the lees, this wine gains further patience in magnum, where maturation slows measurably. Decant generously and serve with herbed leg of lamb, duck confit, or grilled portobellos. It is a definitive expression of limestone-grown Grenache in California. Few sites anywhere in the state can claim a comparable run of acclaim across so many consecutive vintages.
