Among collectors of Louis XIII, the words Rarest Reserve carry particular weight. This designation appeared on decanters bottled for the American market across the mid-twentieth century, while European editions of the same cognac were labeled Age Inconnu, age unknown. A decanter bearing the Rarest Reserve inscription is therefore a document of the brand's history as much as a vessel for its contents, and surviving examples are keenly pursued.
What rests inside demands a century of patience. Louis XIII is assembled from as many as 1,200 Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, some matured for up to 100 years, drawn exclusively from the chalk-rich premier cru of Cognac. No cellar master who lays down its youngest spirits will live to blend them; each generation works for successors it will never meet, a relay of craft that has continued unbroken since 1874.
The eaux-de-vie mature in tierçons, rare oak casks often more than a century old, which surrender their tannin slowly and allow the spirit decades of quiet refinement. The decanter itself reproduces a sixteenth-century metal flask recovered in 1850 from the battlefield of Jarnac, its neck ringed with fleur-de-lys, its crystal worked by master glassmakers.
Expect an aromatic procession that unfolds over hours: saffron, myrrh and honey giving way to dried rose, plum, honeysuckle and fig, with undertones of sandalwood, leather and forest floor. The finish is famously measured not in minutes but in the better part of an hour. This is the summit expression of Grande Champagne, in its most historically significant American dress.
