Promontory is the Harlan family's exploration of a wild, geologically dramatic territory in the Mayacamas foothills between Oakville and Yountville, land Bill Harlan first glimpsed from a ridgeline promontory decades before he could acquire it. Under Will Harlan's direction, the 840-acre property yields a single estate wine of uncommon depth, rooted in fractured volcanic and sedimentary soils. The land had never been farmed for fine wine at scale before the family began coaxing vineyards from its slopes, and its wines taste unlike anything else in the Harlan portfolio.
The 2013 vintage ranks among Napa Valley's most structured and age-worthy of the modern era, a dry, steady season that produced thick-skinned Cabernet Sauvignon of immense concentration and firm tannin. At Promontory, that raw power is tempered by long, patient elevage, including maturation in large-format casks, giving the wine its characteristic savory restraint. The estate treats time itself as an ingredient, releasing each wine only when it is ready to speak.
Expect a brooding profile of blackberry, cassis and dark plum threaded with graphite, forest floor, crushed rock and dried herbs, carried by a tannic architecture built for decades. This bottling comes in 1.5-liter magnum format, whose slower evolution in bottle makes it especially prized for a wine of this longevity.
Decant young bottles for two hours or more and serve with the simplest luxurious fare: cote de boeuf, roasted game or aged Gruyere. Drinking well now with air, the 2013 has the balance to develop through the 2040s, and the magnum format should track the slow, graceful arc collectors hope for. For milestone celebrations still a decade or more away, few Napa Valley wines offer surer footing.
