2012 Piero Busso Barbaresco DOCG Gallina expresses one of Neive's most admired vineyards through the lens of a small family cellar. Gallina is among the historic crus of the commune, an amphitheater of vines long prized for producing Barbaresco of particular perfume and silkiness, and the Busso family acquired their parcel there in 1999. Within Barbaresco, Gallina carries the reputation of a beloved amphitheater: everyone knows the name, and expectations run high.

The estate is genuinely artisanal: roughly ten hectares farmed by Piero Busso, his wife Lucia and their children Pierguido and Emanuela, who handle everything from vine to bottle themselves. Their approach is traditional and site-driven, with each cru bottled separately so that the personality of the vineyard, not a house recipe, leads the wine. Visitors to the cellar in Neive meet the very people who pruned the vines.

The 2012 vintage in Barbaresco produced graceful, mid-weight Nebbiolo that came around earlier than the powerhouse years, and Gallina's natural elegance suits it well. Expect lifted aromas of red cherry, rose and sweet spice, a supple, energetic palate, and the fine-grained tannins that make Neive Barbaresco so rewarding at a decade or more of age. It is the kind of Barbaresco that converts Burgundy drinkers, and patience with 2012 has paid off handsomely.

Now past its tenth birthday, this bottle is in a lovely window, its youthful grip softened into lace while the fruit stays vivid. Decant briefly, serve just below room temperature, and pair it with the food it was raised on: tajarin with butter and sage, braised rabbit, risotto with porcini or truffle. This is Nebbiolo at its most companionable, and Gallina at its most persuasive.
