Newton Vineyard made its reputation on Spring Mountain, yet some of its most intriguing wines grow far below on the Napa Valley floor. This single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the winery's Yountville holdings, where gravelly alluvial soils and cooling evening air drawn up from San Pablo Bay shape a gentler, more perfumed expression of the grape. It is a study in how dramatically place rewrites Cabernet within the span of a few miles. Where the mountain wines are firm and vertical, Yountville brings roundness, generosity and early charm.
The 2016 vintage gave Napa growers a long, even season with generous sun and cool nights, producing wines prized for their marriage of concentration and elegance. In Yountville that translated to fruit picked with both ripeness and lift. Aromas of black cherry and currant are joined by dried herbs, sage, cedar and a distinctive graphite thread, with a subtle mint note that keeps the bouquet fresh and inviting.
The palate is rich and velvety, layering dark fruit with cacao, vanilla and a gentle black-tea grip that draws the finish out. The texture is the headline here: smooth, weighty and seamless, with tannins that support rather than dominate. Compared with Newton's mountain bottlings, this Yountville release trades sinew for silk while keeping genuine depth and length. The oak is present but discreet, seasoning the fruit with vanilla and warm spice rather than shouting over it.
Open the bottle an hour ahead or decant briefly to let the herbal top notes unfurl. It pairs beautifully with filet mignon, duck breast, roast pork or mushroom risotto. Drinking wonderfully now, the wine has the balance and stuffing to keep developing for a decade in a stable cellar, so there is no urgency beyond temptation.
