The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru from Domaine Lignier-Michelot captures the most graceful of Morey-Saint-Denis's grand crus in a vintage of charm and transparency. Clos Saint-Denis gives the village its name and its most lace-like wines, favoring perfume and silk over sheer force. From a holding so small it fills only a single barrel each year, quantities are inherently minute.

Domaine Lignier-Michelot is a three-generation family estate in Morey-Saint-Denis now led by Virgile Lignier, who worked alongside his father Maurice from 1988 and took full charge of the domaine with the 2000 vintage. His approach pairs rigorous sorting and moderate new oak with a feel for supple, fruit-saturated textures, and the estate also farms Clos de la Roche and Charmes-Chambertin. Farming emphasizes low yields and ripe, healthy fruit picked at optimal freshness.

The 2017 vintage produced reds of open-knit elegance, and it flatters this climat's strengths. Expect red cherry, pomegranate, rose petal and mandarin peel over fine chalky tannins, with licorice and forest-floor notes emerging as it unwinds in the glass. The palate is weightless in the way only fine Clos Saint-Denis manages, long and gently saline at the close. It is an object lesson in why this climat is often called Burgundy's quietest grand cru.

Eight years from harvest, the wine is entering an early peak while retaining fruit for further keeping. Drink it now with a short decant, or cellar toward 2032 for deeper spice and sous-bois shading. For collectors mapping the grand crus of Morey, a one-barrel Clos Saint-Denis is the kind of bottle that rarely appears twice. Serve it around sixteen degrees Celsius.
