Laphroaig Select brings together five different cask types in a single Islay malt, presenting the distillery's famous peat in its most approachable register. Introduced in 2014 and bottled at 40% ABV, Select marries whisky drawn from Oloroso sherry butts, Pedro Ximenez-seasoned hogsheads, quarter casks and first-fill bourbon barrels, then gives the vatting a final period of maturation in new American white oak, a cask type still rarely used anywhere in Scotch whisky.
That virgin oak finish is the signature move. New American oak gives up vanilla, coconut and baking-spice sweetness far faster than the well-used refill casks common in Scotland, and here that sweetness is layered over spirit already shaped by sherry and bourbon wood. The result softens Laphroaig's iodine edge without erasing it, letting orchard fruit, dried fruit and warm spice share the stage with peat smoke instead of standing behind it, a genuine departure for the distillery. Each cask type is chosen for what it gives, and the marriage is balanced so no single wood dominates the final whisky.
Expect gentle smoke rather than a full Atlantic gale: peat embers, sweet vanilla and ripe apple on the nose, then a palate of dried apricot, nutmeg, cocoa and coastal salt, closing on a medium finish of soft ash and oak spice. Bottled without an age statement, Select is built around younger, livelier casks that keep the whisky bright and aromatic, which is precisely why it works as an everyday dram rather than a special-occasion pour.
For newcomers to Islay whisky, Select is a welcoming first step; for longtime Laphroaig devotees, it is a study in how wood choices bend a distillery's character. It comes from the same Kildalton coast site founded in 1815, the same hand-turned floor maltings and the same cold peat smoke as its siblings, simply arranged in a lighter key. Serve it neat, open it with a drop of water, or let it play the smoky backbone of a highball.
