Krug Grande Cuvee 171eme Edition Brut is the 171st rendition of an idea older than most wineries: that a Champagne blended across many years can express more than any single harvest. Each edition is a one-time creation, assembled once and never repeated, and the edition number on the label lets drinkers trace exactly which act of the story they are pouring. Joseph Krug sketched the philosophy in his personal notebook in 1848, and the house still cites that document as its founding text.
The 171eme Edition is built around the 2015 harvest and draws on 131 individual wines from 12 different years, the youngest from 2015 and the oldest dating back to 2000. Reserve wines from the house's library make up 42% of the final blend, lending the breadth and roundness that define Grande Cuvee.
Its final composition is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, and 18% Meunier. Pinot Noir supplies the backbone and dark-fruited depth, Chardonnay the citrus tension and chalky line, and Meunier the plush, fruit-forward middle. Years of aging on the lees add the toasted-bread, hazelnut, and honeyed notes that make the wine unmistakable in a blind flight. Every bottle carries a Krug iD on the back label, a code that reveals the edition's full story of years and wines.
Open it with real food: turbot, roast chicken, aged hard cheeses, or dishes with cream and mushrooms all flatter its weight. Serve around fifty degrees in a tulip or white-wine glass rather than a narrow flute. Like every edition, it will also continue to develop for years in a cool, dark cellar. It is the rare flagship that manages to be both an aperitif and the most serious wine on the table.
