Courage roars back into the zodiac with the Year of the Tiger, and Johnnie Walker's 2022 Lunar New Year edition of Blue Label meets it at full stride. Released for the new year beginning on 1 February 2022, the bottle celebrates a sign associated with bravery, strength and decisive action, the animal that charges where others hesitate. It also marked a changing of the guard inside the bottle, the first Lunar edition of a new blending era. Among the annual zodiac editions, this is the one with the most momentum in its design.
Shanghai-born artist Shan Jiang created the artwork, depicting a majestic tiger with golden wings climbing through mountain clouds toward a gleaming modern metropolis, a deliberate meeting of Chinese mythology and contemporary ambition. Jiang has said he wanted the design to look toward the year ahead with positivity, drawing on ideas of progress and of always moving forward, values that align precisely with the Keep Walking philosophy stamped into the brand's identity.
Inside is Johnnie Walker Blue Label as the new generation presents it: Dr Emma Walker, appointed Master Blender after decades of work by Jim Beveridge, now oversees the reserves from which only about one cask in ten thousand is chosen. The pour is silk and ember at once, opening on honey, orange zest and hazelnut before rich spice and dark chocolate deepen into the long, warming trail of smoke. Poured neat it rewards patience; a single drop of water opens the fruit further.
Tiger years belong to the bold, to first movers and risk takers, and this edition makes their trophy. The winged tiger's ascent reads as a toast to anyone climbing toward something bigger.
