The 2017 White Hawk Vineyard Syrah comes from one of Santa Barbara County's most distinctive sites, a south-facing slope in Cat Canyon about two miles north of the town of Los Alamos. Marine air traveling twenty-one miles inland wraps the vineyard in early-morning fog before yielding to bright, warm sun, a rhythm that stretches ripening and layers complexity into the fruit. The 2017 season on the Central Coast turned warm and generous, and this bottling wears that vintage's richness with unusual grace.
What truly sets White Hawk apart is underfoot. The vines are planted at nearly 900 feet of elevation on ancient, pure sand dunes that drain water and nutrients almost instantly, forcing the plants to struggle for survival. The payoff is minuscule yields of small, intense, slow-ripening berries, precisely the raw material Syrah needs to show its most perfumed, concentrated side. Deep sand like this has historically resisted phylloxera as well, one more reason growers treasure these ancient dunes.
This vintage delivers a deep ruby core with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and violet shaded by cracked black pepper and a whisper of smoke.
