The 2013 Futo Estate Red presents the winery's original Oakville flagship in magnum, a format tailor-made for a vintage of this magnitude. The 2013 growing season gave Napa Valley one of its most structured, age-worthy harvests in a generation, and in 1.5-liter glass the wine's already glacial maturation curve stretches further still, to the benefit of patient cellars.
Futo began in 2002 when Tom and Kyle Futo acquired a secluded property in the western hills of Oakville, land formerly known as Oakford Vineyards. The rocky, west-side slopes sit in the same prized band of terrain as some of Napa's most exalted Cabernet sites, and the estate's farming has been rebuilt block by block to an exacting standard. Farming leans on meticulous canopy work and severe crop thinning, choices that register directly in the wine's density.
The 2013 assembles 59% Cabernet Sauvignon with an unusually generous 35% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, raised in new French oak from elite coopers including Taransaud and Darnajou. The Franc component threads sage, violets and blue fruit through a core of blackcurrant, crushed stone and dark chocolate, all girded by the vintage's formidable tannin. Cabernet Franc thrives in these cooler, rocky exposures, which is why it earns so large a share of the assembly.
This magnum is squarely within its drinking window yet nowhere near its end. Two hours of decanting rewards those opening it young in its arc, revealing an inky, layered hillside red of real gravitas. Cellared properly, it should continue gaining nuance into the early 2040s, with a suggested window running from 2026 through 2043. Serve at sixty-two to sixty-five degrees for best focus.
