Taupenot-Merme is a longstanding family domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, its estate shaped by the 1963 union of the Taupenot family of Saint-Romain and the Mermes of Morey. Romain Taupenot joined full-time in 1998, the very vintage in this bottle, and now guides holdings that stretch across both Cotes, from village parcels to grand cru sites, with careful, low-intervention farming. The family's holdings also include celebrated grand cru parcels farther along the same road.
Morey's village vineyards sit between the walls of celebrated clos, sharing their limestone bones, and 1998 gave firm, structured wines that wanted patience. Time has delivered: expect sour cherry preserved in earth, dried mushrooms, worn leather, clove and a bricking rim, with tannins fully melted and acidity still drawing the finish out. It is a textbook study in mature Cote de Nuits. That structure is exactly what allowed the wine to travel this far in time.
Bottles of this age reward simple care: stand upright beforehand, pour steadily off sediment, and serve just below room temperature without decanting.
