God Only Knows is Christophe Baron's love letter to Grenache, grown in the Armada Vineyard on the cobblestone flood plain of the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. The vines are reported to descend from cuttings tied to Chateau Rayas, the most mythic Grenache estate on earth, and the wine's name winks at the blend's loosely guarded secrets. Baron has always treated Grenache as a first-class citizen rather than a blending afterthought, and this cuvee is his proof.
The 2014 was raised the Cayuse way: essentially one hundred percent whole-cluster fermentation in concrete, then aging in neutral puncheons and foudre, with a single concrete egg in the mix and only 533 cases made. Nothing about the process flatters the wine toward the mainstream; everything channels stone, stems and fruit into something feral and perfumed. The stems bring spice and lift, the concrete brings purity, and the old wood simply lets the vineyard do the talking.
Jeb Dunnuck, reviewing for Wine Advocate, rated the 2014 God Only Knows 97 points, describing black cherry, reduced strawberry, herbes de Provence and crushed violets in a rich yet elegant, fine-tannined frame. It is Grenache with Rhone soul and unmistakably American audacity, from a vintage that gave the Walla Walla Valley generous ripeness. That review placed it among the finest American Grenaches of its generation.
Serve it slightly cool, around 58 to 60 degrees, with duck confit, porchetta or grilled quail. Drinking gorgeously a decade from harvest, it has the stuffing to evolve through 2030 for those who can resist. As it opens, garrigue and rose-petal perfume climb over the fruit, and its modest tannin makes it a rare cellar wine that never demands red meat.
