Most of the world knows Cayuse for Syrah, yet insiders often hunt hardest for Camaspelo, the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot. The 2014 Cayuse Camaspelo makes the case emphatically, translating a warm, abundant Walla Walla Valley vintage through soils of stacked basalt cobbles unlike anything else in American viticulture. The label honors a Cayuse headman of the treaty era, and fewer cases of it emerge each year than of the estate's headline Syrahs.
Christophe Baron farms these Rocks District plantings biodynamically, treating each vine as an individual, and his Bordeaux varieties absorb the same wild signature as his Syrahs: sanguine minerality, warm stone and an herbal, high-desert savor. In 2014 the generous season added flesh, producing a deeper, more layered Camaspelo than the norm. Where the 2013 leaned taut and mineral, this rendition shows broader shoulders, though the stony undertow keeps it unmistakably of its place.
Wine Advocate scored the 2014 at 96+, an exceptional mark for Cabernet-based wine from Washington State's orbit, with a profile of creme de cassis, roasted herbs, graphite and licorice riding fine-boned yet insistent tannins. The plus sign says it plainly: this wine was still ascending when reviewed. Coverage of that period ranked the estate among the Pacific Northwest's most singular producers, and this bottling argues the point.
Sold almost entirely to a long-waitlisted mailing list, Camaspelo rarely surfaces with age on it. Decant forty-five minutes and pair with braised lamb shoulder, venison loin or mushroom bourguignon. Its arc comfortably reaches 2036. Serve at cellar temperature in large-bowled stemware, and expect the savory notes to lead with the fruit close behind, gaining detail as the glass warms.
