Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection 15 Minute Infrared Light Wave Barrels is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This May 2016 release is the shorter-treatment half of a paired infrared-light experiment, with four barrels exposed to 15 minutes of combined short wave and medium wave infrared at 70% power before receiving a quick #1 char (about 15 seconds) and being filled with Buffalo Trace's Bourbon Mash #1.
The Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection launched in 2006 as the distillery's ongoing program of small-scale bourbon and whiskey experiments. Over 30,000 experimental barrels age in Buffalo Trace's warehouses, each crafted with unique variations in mash bill, wood type, barrel toasting, char level, and aging conditions. Selected experiments are bottled and released in limited quantities in 375ml "lab-style" bottles, each labeled with detailed production notes - a direct window into how master distillers Harlen Wheatley and the BT team push the boundaries of American whiskey-making.
The infrared treatment heats the wood from within rather than from the surface, theoretically caramelizing oak sugars at depth that a traditional char cannot reach. The 15-minute, 70%-power barrels yield a floral nose followed by a complex profile - oak and tannins mingling with dry raisins and sweet caramel.
Four barrels were produced and aged 6 years 5 months before bottling at 90 proof, paired with the 30 Minute Infrared Light Wave Barrels companion. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
