Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection 100% French Oak Barrel Aged is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2015 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace Rye Bourbon Mash Bill #1 (low-rye recipe) and filled in 2005 into a barrel built entirely from French oak - staves air-dried for six months and charred for 55 seconds - then aged for ten years before bottling in May 2015.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace's long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery's warehouses. The 2015 French Oak release paired this 100% French oak barrel against a hybrid barrel with American oak staves and French oak heads, isolating full French-oak influence versus head-only contact. Only two barrels were produced.
On the nose, it shows soft fruit, peaches, apricot, and citrus. The palate brings buttery body layered with apple and apricot fruit, and the finish carries a gentle, mellow close lighter than typical American-oak bourbon character.
The tight grain and tighter tannin profile of French oak exchanges American oak's heavier vanilla and caramel for a brighter, fruit-driven expression. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
