The 2010 BRAND Cabernet Sauvignon captures the early years of one of Pritchard Hill's most closely watched estates. Founded in 2009 on a 110-acre property high above the Napa Valley floor, BRAND set out to make mountain Cabernet that could stand beside its storied neighbors, and this bottling shows how quickly the site announced itself. Early vintages like this one are snapshots of a vineyard discovering its voice.
The estate's roughly fifteen acres of vines sit at 1,200 to 1,400 feet on rocky, volcanic soils, above the fog line where long sunlight hours meet cool air and relentless drainage. The hill's famous neighbors long ago proved what these red volcanic soils can do with Cabernet. Consulting winemaker Philippe Melka, whose résumé spans several benchmark Pritchard Hill producers, recognized the pedigree of these slopes and helped define the estate's precise, terroir-first style.
The 2010 growing season in Napa was long and cool, producing structured wines with notable freshness, and this Cabernet reflects it: black currant, dark cherry and plum framed by graphite, dried sage, cedar and espresso. The house élevage of up to two years in largely new French oak adds polish without burying the mountain tannin underneath.
Now past its fifteenth year, the wine sits in a rewarding middle age, with tertiary tobacco and forest-floor notes emerging alongside still-vibrant fruit. Decant thirty to sixty minutes and pair with dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs or portobello dishes. Well-stored bottles should continue to drink beautifully through the early 2030s. It is a compelling bottle for anyone tracing how Pritchard Hill's newest estates earned their reputations.
