Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded in 2002 on a contrarian bet: that Campo de Borja, then known chiefly for inexpensive cooperative Garnacha, could yield wines of world rank. With Australian Chris Ringland directing the winemaking, the bet paid off quickly. The estate bottling that simply bears the winery's name is the heart of the range, standing between the early-drinking Veraton and the scarce Aquilon. Within a few vintages the wines were being poured at ambitious tables far beyond Spain.

Fruit comes from mature, dry-farmed Garnacha spread over slopes of clay, iron-tinged stone and slate beneath Moncayo, the snow-capped peak that shields the zone. The cierzo wind keeps the clusters small and healthy, and the resulting wine is fermented in modest lots before a generous stay in new French oak that rounds Garnacha's exuberance into something plush. Vine age across the parcels runs to several decades, with yields held far below the appellation norm.

The warm, steady 2006 season suited the house style. Expect a deep well of blueberry, kirsch and blackberry laced with mocha, cinnamon and a smoky mineral edge, all now softened by two decades in bottle into flavors of fig, cola and sweet tobacco. The texture is broad and glycerous, with tannins that have melted almost completely.

Serve this mature Garnacha with short ribs, mushroom rice or grilled sausages, giving it a brief decant to shed sediment and open the perfume. It offers the Alto Moncayo experience one rung below Aquilon in intensity, and at its current stage of evolution it should be enjoyed rather than held. Glasses with a generous bowl flatter its broad, heady aromatics.
