The 2021 Sugar Shack Estate Chardonnay comes from the Auberts' own backyard, quite literally. Sugar Shack is the family's home ranch in Rutherford, a seven-plus-acre property whose playful name the couple first gave the house beside the vines. In a lineup dominated by Sonoma fruit, this is the Napa Valley heart of the collection. Mark Aubert, formerly winemaker at Peter Michael and Colgin, put down roots here with Teresa, which makes this the label's most autobiographical wine.
Up-valley Rutherford is Cabernet country, which makes this parcel one of only a handful of Chardonnay vineyards in such warm inland territory. The Auberts planted what they consider their most unique Chardonnay clone here, and the setting yields a broader, sunnier expression than the coastal wines, with flesh and honeyed generosity in place of maritime salinity. Warm valley days ripen the clone's exotic side, while cool nights preserve the acid line that keeps everything composed.
Antonio Galloni's Vinous rated the 2021 in the 94-96 point range, calling it a classic Mark Aubert wine: creamy, ample and super-expressive right out of the gate, with lemon confit, white flowers, tangerine oil and lightly honeyed overtones framed by soft, silky contours. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate added toasted hazelnut and ripe peach impressions at 93-95 points. The drought-marked 2021 season produced tiny berries across Napa, lending extra intensity beneath the silk.
Galloni singled out Sugar Shack as one of the most immediate wines of Aubert's 2021 range, ready to shine on release. Pour it around 55 degrees with lobster rolls, roast turkey or corn risotto, and expect it to cruise gracefully toward the early 2030s. Its open-knit youth makes it the rare Aubert that demands no cellar patience at all.
