The 1999 Alban Vineyards Reva Estate Syrah is an estate-grown Syrah from Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County, California, made by John Alban, the visionary who founded the first American winery devoted exclusively to Rhone grape varieties. Reva stands among his signature estate bottlings and has helped define what California Syrah can achieve. Planted when Rhone grapes were an afterthought in America, the estate became the template for a generation of growers who followed.
Alban planted his vineyard near Arroyo Grande in Edna Valley's cool, fog-brushed corridor, one of the longest growing seasons on the Central Coast. The Reva parcels occupy neutral sandy ground alongside chalky, alkaline soils, and the winery notes a distinctive iodine and oyster-shell aromatic that separates Reva from its sibling Syrahs. Yields here are punishingly low, and every block is farmed by hand with obsessive attention to balance.
Alban's patient cellar regime, with lengthy barrel maturation and bottling without fining or filtration, builds wines of unusual density and savor. In this vintage that translates to brambly black fruit, cured olive, smoked game, sea-spray minerality, and cracked pepper, all knit together by a quarter century of quiet development. Acidity from the cold site keeps the wine fresh even at full maturity, a signature of Alban's vineyard.
A cellar-aged Rhone-style icon from the 1990s, this bottle is fully mature. Let it rest upright before opening, decant softly to leave sediment behind, and serve at cool room temperature with roasted lamb or mushroom dishes. Bottles from this era of the estate rarely surface, so drink now while its tertiary perfume is in full voice.
