The 2024 UV-SL Vineyard Chardonnay carries the most personal name at Aubert. UV honors the late, legendary vineyard manager Ulises Valdez Sr.; SL marks his home estate on Stoetz Lane, where Valdez and Mark Aubert collaborated on planting this Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard together roughly fifteen years ago. Valdez was among California's most celebrated vineyard figures, and this bottling keeps his craftsmanship in the glass as well as on the label.
The site lies in the far western reaches of the Sonoma Coast, one of very few vineyards only six miles from the Pacific Ocean. Maritime influence is omnipresent, warm sun-dappled afternoons refreshed by cool ocean breezes, and it stamps the wine with salinity, tension and aromatic lift rare even within Aubert's coastal set. Few sites this close to the water can fully ripen Chardonnay, which makes the vineyard something of a viticultural high-wire act.
Wine Spectator awarded 96 points, praising vibrant orange blossom, lemon thyme and lime zest over CrimsonCrisp apple, with gray sea salt and chalky minerality amplifying both texture and flavor. Vinous scored 95-97 from barrel, describing soaring aromatics of cut flowers, slate, mint and dried herbs in a tense, salivating Chardonnay of tremendous depth. The two notes converge on the same idea from different directions: minerality first, opulence earned.
The truest ocean wine in the range, UV-SL suits drinkers chasing energy and salt air over sheer opulence. Cellar into the early 2040s or serve now, well chilled, with raw oysters, ceviche or grilled branzino. As the 2024s from this address settle, expect the salty edge to sharpen and the mid-palate to broaden.
