The 2024 Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard Chardonnay is where, in Aubert's own words, White Burgundy meets California. Farmed by one of Carneros's founding grape-growing families, the site gives Mark Aubert his coolest fruit and his most Old World-leaning wine, and in 2024 it drew Wine Spectator's highest score in the entire Aubert lineup. For Chardonnay drinkers who collect grower names the way Burgundians collect climats, Hyde is as blue-chip as California gets.
The vineyard benefits from steady maritime air off San Pablo Bay, and its pedigree is literal: Larry Hyde hand-selected a rare Chardonnay clone and offered it to the Auberts in the mid-2000s. That plant material, in this cold corner of Carneros, produces wines of precision rather than sheer mass. Fog and wind hold this corner of the district cooler than its neighbors, delaying harvest and concentrating aromatics.
Wine Spectator's 98-point review called the 2024 complex, aromatic and remarkable, its lemon meringue, grilled pineapple, white peach and creme caramel riding sleek acidity into a long, salted-toffee finish. From barrel, Vinous saw 93-95 points of total precision and class, with lemon confit, slate, white pepper and apricot in an elegant, slightly ethereal frame. The 98 stands as the top mark Wine Spectator gave any 2024 Aubert Chardonnay.
This is the 2024 for drinkers who prize energy and lift over baby fat. Cellar it confidently into the 2040s, or serve now at cellar temperature with Dover sole, poularde in cream or fine Alpine cheeses. Lovers of aged white Burgundy should tuck a few bottles away for the decade mark, when the mineral side fully surfaces.
