Every other wine Rose & Arrow makes is Pinot Noir; Eola Springs is the single exception, the estate's lone white and its complete statement on Willamette Valley Chardonnay. It grows at 600 feet in the Eola-Amity Hills on shallow, stony basalt of medium decomposition, ground the team selected because its fracture pattern gives white wine a wet-stone mineral sensation and unusual textural depth. The choice reflects the estate's conviction that Chardonnay, like Pinot Noir, is at its best a transparent reading of rock.
The 2022 vintage began with a mid-April frost that cut yields across the northern Willamette Valley, then swung to a long, warm autumn that let surviving fruit ripen slowly toward a late harvest. For Chardonnay the equation proved favorable: a small crop, extended hang time and cool nights that locked in acidity while flavors quietly deepened. Whites from the vintage across the valley show a rare pairing of ripeness with cut, and this bottling captures both.
Production runs to roughly 125 cases a year, in keeping with an estate whose entire holding amounts to 5.2 acres of noncontiguous basalt ribbons identified through Pedro Parra's electroconductivity surveys. Winemaker Felipe Ramirez handles the site with the same native-yeast philosophy that guides the reds, aiming for a wine that speaks of rock rather than of the cellar.
The result is refreshing, elegant and persistently long, with citrus and orchard fruit riding a saline, stony undertow. Serve it around 52 degrees with oysters, roast chicken or soft-rind cheeses, and expect the texture to broaden beautifully over five or more years in a stable, temperature-controlled space. Avoid overchilling, which mutes the stony perfume that makes the wine distinctive, and give it a brief decant if opened early.
