Ornellaia, the estate wine of the eponymous Bolgheri property, is drawn from complex ancient soils moderated by the Mediterranean a few kilometers away. Since 1985 it has been made as a Bordeaux-style blend that answers to the Tuscan coast rather than the Atlantic. Each vintage is given a single word of character by the winemaking team, and 2022 was christened La Determinazione, determination, for the resolve the year demanded of vines and cellar alike.
A cool, dry spring delayed budbreak, and from May an unbroken 75-day drought put the vineyards under real water stress, cutting yields. Summer storms in August reawakened the vines, and a superb September of warm days and cool nights ripened sugar, aroma and tannin in step. Picking began with Merlot on August 25 and closed with the last Cabernet on October 10. The result was a low-yield vintage of unusual concentration.
The 2022 assembles 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot at 14.5% alcohol. Clusters were hand-harvested into 15-kilogram crates and sorted twice by hand plus optical selection, and every variety and vineyard block was vinified separately before malolactic in barrique. The wine spent about 18 months in barriques, 70% new, was assembled at twelve months, and rested a further year in bottle.
The estate describes an expressive bouquet of black fruit touched with vanilla and tobacco, an expansive, generous palate, and a powerful tannic frame driving to a savory, enduring finish: a hot-year Ornellaia that nonetheless keeps its signature elegance and vibrancy. The long elevage means it arrives already knitted together, though the structure plainly supports extended cellaring. Roast game, bistecca and aged pecorino are natural partners.
