The 2022 HDV Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay proves how much a great cellar philosophy matters in a demanding year. From a compact, low-yield season punctuated by intense Labor Day heat, the estate drew a white of surprising poise, thanks to Carneros's cooling bay influence and a picking regime tuned to freshness above all. Vintages like this reveal which vineyards truly deserve their reputations.
This flagship draws from two mature blocks of the fabled vineyard Larry Hyde has tended since 1979: tiny-clustered Wente-selection vines lending yellow apple, citrus blossom, and a smoky flintiness, and Calera-selection vines adding pear, floral lift, and spine. It is a genetic dialogue that no other producer bottles from this ground in quite the same way. The two selections are raised together into a single seamless whole rather than as separate cuvees, each covering the other's rare quiet moments.
The winemaking would look familiar in Meursault: eighteen months of fermentation and rest split among foudre, barrel, and concrete egg, a mere 15 percent new wood, zero batonnage, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. By refusing to stir the lees, HdV keeps the wine vertical and saline rather than creamy, a deliberate stand against California convention. Concrete's gentle breathing adds breadth that wood alone cannot supply.
Notes of Meyer lemon, green pear, wet chalk, and toasted almond ride a beam of mouthwatering acidity into a long, savory close. Delicious with halibut, raw shellfish, or triple-cream cheese, it will gain nuance through 2032. This is Carneros Chardonnay at its most architectural.
