Spring Mountain joined the Lokoya quartet in 2005, a decade after the winery's founding, and it remains the most perfumed voice in the lineup. The 2021 bottling pairs that floral, red-fruited signature with the concentration of a stern drought year, when tiny crops across Napa Valley produced wines of striking depth and intensity. The appellation itself was established in 1993, making it one of Napa's younger official districts.
The appellation climbs the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas above St. Helena, along the ridge that separates Napa from Sonoma. Cool daytime temperatures, deficient soils and sharply inclined vineyard terraces conspire to slow Cabernet down. Lokoya draws primarily from three sites: the estate-owned Yverdon vineyard at 2,100 feet, the Wurtele vineyard at 1,000 feet and Spring Mountain Vineyard at 1,800 feet. Tasters often find a cool, redwood-forest note threading through the district's wines.
In 2021, a second consecutive dry winter cut yields dramatically, and the small berries that survived carried intense color and flavor. Cool mountain air preserved the high-toned aromatics, giving Christopher Carpenter fruit that asked for nothing beyond his standard hands-off regimen: native fermentation, French oak and bottling without fining or filtration. What the year took in quantity it repaid in intensity, and mountain sites fared better than most in the dry conditions.
The house describes Spring Mountain's wines through floral perfume, deep red fruit and smooth tannins, and this vintage leans into all three. It shows more early charm than its Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder siblings, yet carries ample structure to develop gracefully in the cellar for many years to come. Pair it with herb-roasted chicken, duck or mushroom dishes that echo its perfume rather than fight it.
