Dark, gravelly soils and the ceaseless cooling pull of San Pablo Bay define Sleeping Lady Vineyard, the Yountville site behind Anjea. Farmed by the Bettinelli family with a care the Kinsmans liken to the reverence for land embodied by the wine's namesake, an Aboriginal Australian fertility goddess, the vineyard delivers cabernet of rare delineation, its flavors etched rather than blurred by ripeness. The 2021 growing season asked little intervention of anyone, and this site required less than most.
Winemaking here is an exercise in restraint. Nigel Kinsman has said that Anjea pretty much makes itself, and that there is no greater joy than stepping aside when fruit arrives with everything it needs to form a beautifully proportioned wine. The result trades the silky plumpness of much Napa cabernet for pinpoint tension, sleek fruit, and a quietly insistent structural spine. Fermentations are unforced, extraction gentle, and the elevage is measured to protect the vineyard's naturally fine-boned tannin.
The 2021 season compounded that intensity: a third straight drought year in Napa Valley brought tiny berries and small crops, concentrating flavor without sacrificing freshness. Wine Spectator's James Molesworth found the wine sleek in feel, with vivid notes of black cherry, black currant, and blackberry coulis coursing over pinpoint structure, all boding well for extended time in the cellar. It is a vintage that flatters patient collectors.
This is a cabernet for people who prize line over sheer mass. Open it now with a long decant and serve alongside herb-crusted rack of lamb or duck breast, or bury it in the cellar for a decade and let Yountville's cool-air elegance unwind slowly. Either way, it captures the measured, site-first Kinsman Eades style at its most transparent. Its poise beside cedar-scented, savory dishes is a particular pleasure.
