The 2019 HDV Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay earned 93 points from Antonio Galloni of Vinous, who admired its bright, focused profile and called it an especially taut expression of a vineyard whose Chardonnays usually run richer. That tension is exactly what the Hyde and de Villaine families built this estate to capture.
Terroir does the heavy lifting here. Hyde Vineyard occupies sedimentary terraces at the eastern edge of Los Carneros, where shallow loamy soils threaded with ancient streambeds impose gentle stress on the vines, and Pacific wind funneled through the Petaluma Gap slows ripening to a crawl. The long hang time completes phenolic maturity while guarding the acidity that defines this bottling. Hydric stress arrives gently here, tightening berries without ever shutting the vines down.
The generous, even-keeled 2019 vintage met a cellar regimen designed for transparency: eighteen months across foudre, neutral barrel, and concrete egg, only 15 percent new oak, no stirring, and bottling without fining or filtration. Both Wente and Calera vine selections contribute, the former bringing flint and savor, the latter orchard perfume and drive. Nothing in the process is flashy, and that is precisely the point. Galloni's tasting note reads almost like a Chablis review, which both families would take as a compliment.
Citrus zest, white peach, crushed shells, and a gunflint whisper define a palate that is chiseled, saline, and very long. It is superb now with oysters or Dungeness crab and has the balance to evolve gracefully into 2031. Burgundy lovers who doubt California should start with this bottle.
