Lienà is Giovanni Chiappini's experimental line, born of a simple question: what does each noble grape of Bolgheri taste like on its own? Produced only in outstanding vintages and in tiny quantities, the series bottles single varieties — Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and this Cabernet Franc — so the territory can speak through one voice at a time. Where the estate's flagship blends three grapes into harmony, Lienà isolates them, a study in contrast that makes the two wines fascinating to taste side by side.
The 2019 Lienà Cabernet Franc is 100% varietal, grown in the Felciaino vineyard on Bolgheri's alluvial, calcareous soils from plantings dating to 1986 and 2001. Yields are pared to roughly 800 grams per vine and the fruit is picked at the end of September, when Cabernet Franc trades its green edge for dark, perfumed ripeness. Cabernet Franc has quietly become one of coastal Tuscany's most exciting grapes, and Bolgheri's warm, breezy climate suits it perfectly.
Fermented with natural yeasts in steel, the wine then rests for at least 24 months in French oak barrels, 30% new, and only about 2,000 bottles are made. The nose is a Cabernet Franc lover's reward: tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and licorice woven through plum and dried fruit, with the variety's telltale herbal lift kept elegantly in check.
On the palate it is rich yet composed, with smooth, satiny tannins and a savory, long-lasting finish that expresses the singular elegance of Bolgheri. Six years on, the 2019 is drinking beautifully and will continue to deepen for years to come. Serve it with herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, or roast duck, and give it thirty minutes in a decanter first.
