The 2018 Michter's US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is bottled at 91.4 proof (45.7% ABV) and is distilled and bottled in Kentucky by Michter's. A small-batch, limited release, the 2018 edition marked the return of the Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon after a three-year absence — its first release since 2015 — during Pamela Heilmann's tenure as Master Distiller.
It is made by taking Michter's US-1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and aging it for an additional period in a second custom barrel, assembled from 18-month air-dried wood and toasted but never charred. The achievement is remarkable for what it is not: Kentucky Straight Bourbon with nothing extra added or done except placement in that second toasted barrel, where caramelized wood sugars draw out deeper flavor. Michter's launched the Toasted Barrel Finish program in the fall of 2014 as the first toasted barrel whiskey ever released in America, and the expression appears only from time to time as a small-batch limited release. After the 2015 release, fans waited three years for the expression to return, and the 2018 bottling brought it back to a market that had developed a real appetite for it.
The toasting gives the bourbon its signature character: campfire and cinnamon with pecan and candied fruit, and a lingering finish of baked pears, vanilla, and marshmallow. Michter's continues the legacy of a company that traces its roots to 1753 and the original Shenk's distillery, and it stands today among the most admired names in American whiskey. Heilmann had become the first woman since Prohibition to serve as Master Distiller at a Kentucky Distillers' Association member distillery, and the 2018 is a sought-after vintage from that era for collectors of limited Michter's releases. For many drinkers, its 2018 comeback confirmed the toasted-barrel finish as a permanent and prized part of the Michter's lineup, and the vintage is now increasingly difficult to find.
