For the 2018 Stones No. 3, Fairchild Estate reached into the oldest vines of Oakville's Tench Vineyard, the Perrarus Block 3 source that neighbors Screaming Eagle across a shared property line. The result was the highest-scoring wine of the estate's 2018 trio, a Cabernet Sauvignon that channels red-rock Oakville soil into something floral, mineral, and profound. It stands as the collector's pinnacle within the 2018 set.

Old vines matter at Tench: their deep roots temper vigor and concentrate flavor, and in the unhurried 2018 season they produced fruit of exceptional perfume. The vineyard's ground, which the winery likens to an ancient cobbled street of red rock, contributes an iron-rich mineral undercurrent that Philippe Melka preserved through gentle extraction and patient élevage in mostly new French oak. Rows here ripen unevenly by design, and repeated passes through the vines kept only perfect clusters.

Jeb Dunnuck rated the wine 99 points in the review the winery publishes, describing unevolved blueberries, raspberries, crushed violets, lead pencil, iron, and graphite ahead of a huge, rich, full-bodied palate with polished tannins. His drinking range of 2022 through 2055 marks this as one of the longest-lived wines Fairchild has yet released.

Still early in that arc, the 2018 rewards a slow decant and a menu with presence: bone-in strip loin, lamb shoulder braised with rosemary, or squab with cherry jus. Its violet-and-iron aromatics make it a striking counterpoint to the darker No. 1 from the same vintage. Kept cool and undisturbed, it should outlast most cellars built around it. Patience pays twice over: the violets grow louder and the iron turns to warm earth with each passing year.
