Stones No. 3 trades the mountain for the Oakville bench: its fruit comes from Perrarus Block 3 in the Tench Vineyard, which shares a fence line with Screaming Eagle and which Fairchild Estate calls perhaps the most significant site in its portfolio. The 2017 edition captures that pedigree in a tighter, more linear frame than the hillside Stones cuvées. Few addresses in Napa carry more quiet prestige than this stretch of eastern Oakville gravel.
Tench's soils resemble an ancient cobblestone street of red rock and minerals, and the Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon planted there gives gravel-textured wines with loamy undertones. In the fast-moving 2017 harvest, this east-side Oakville ground delivered fruit of striking purity, which Philippe Melka guided through fermentation and into barrel for Larry Fairchild's small-lot program. Even in a hurried year, the block's natural balance allowed full flavor development without excess sugar.
After 22 months in new French oak, the wine emerged to a 97-point review from Jeb Dunnuck, published by the winery, citing stunning blackcurrants, iron, savory spices, and baking chocolate, with ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and flawless balance. He ranked it among the top wines of the vintage, noting how the site's minerality threads through every layer.
Built for two decades of evolution, the 2017 is drinking beautifully now with an hour of air and will hold gracefully toward 2040. Its iron-and-currant profile flatters classic steakhouse fare, yet it has the elegance for seared duck breast or a truffled beef Wellington. Store it on its side in a cool cellar and it will keep repaying attention. A vertical beside the 2018 shows how differently two seasons can read the same cobbled ground.
