Estate Cuvée is where Kapcsandy's Bordeaux instincts show most clearly: a Cabernet Sauvignon built for the table, polished in its youth and layered as it matures. The 2016 blends 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with 16% Merlot pulled from the very blocks that produce Roberta's Reserve, and critics noted how that Merlot fills out the mid-palate with an uncommon plushness. It is a bottling the family has produced since its earliest vintages on State Lane, refined year after year.
Élevage followed the house style in miniature, with 88% new French oak joined by 6% new Hungarian oak and 6% second-fill French barrels over the wine's time in the cellar. The finished wine registers a balanced 14.3% alcohol and shows a deep garnet-purple color in the glass. As with everything from this Yountville property, the fruit comes exclusively from the estate's own replanted blocks.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous rated it 95 points, calling it one of the most refined wines he had tasted from Kapcsandy, with silky tannins and lifted, savory aromatics adding to an impression of polish. Wine Advocate added 94 points for its wonderfully spicy nose of Chinese five spice, eucalyptus and dark chocolate over crème de cassis, with lovely velvety tannins, generous fruit and a long, exotic finish.
