The 2016 Au Sommet Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon pairs one of Napa Valley's loftiest vineyards with its most famous winemaker. Au Sommet, French for at the summit, is crafted by Heidi Barrett, the talent behind Screaming Eagle's most storied vintages, in partnership with proprietor John Schwartz and viticulturist Jim Barbour, with a first vintage in 2008. Production is boutique in scale, placing Au Sommet firmly in cult Cabernet territory.

The estate crowns Atlas Peak at roughly 2,100 feet above the fog line, where vines bask in extended mountain sunlight while cooling breezes and nighttime temperature drops of as much as twenty degrees slow ripening. The result is small-berried fruit of intense color and flavor with the firm, polished tannin that defines great Napa mountain Cabernet. Barbour, one of Napa's most sought-after vineyard developers, farms the site to exacting standards, with yields kept punishingly low so that every cluster earns its place in the blend.

The Wine Advocate rated the 2016 vintage 96+ points, describing a deep garnet-purple wine bursting with exuberant crushed blackcurrants, warm plums, wild blueberries and cloves, medium to full-bodied with a firm, grainy texture and refreshing lift. It captures a historic Napa growing season on one of its most dramatic sites.

Drinking beautifully now with an hour in the decanter, the 2016 has the architecture to develop for another decade or more. Pour it with dry-aged steak, roasted lamb or wild mushroom dishes, and savor a cult-scale mountain Cabernet from the height of Barrett's powers. The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of Napa's finest of the decade, and mountain bottlings like this one are among its most age-worthy expressions.
