Few vineyard names carry the weight of To Kalon. First planted by H.W. Crabb in 1868 on Oakville's western bench and christened with the Greek for 'the highest beauty,' the site has produced defining Napa Valley wines across three centuries. The Beckstoffer-owned heart of the vineyard is today the most famous single block of Cabernet land in America, and access to its fruit is a credential in itself.
The Debate exists to compare great vineyards on equal terms, producing single-variety, single-site wines so the ground itself can be tasted side by side, and nothing in the winemaking is designed to obscure the site. Its Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon is the valley-floor argument in that conversation: deep, broad-shouldered wine with the granular tannin and full-bodied sweep this vineyard is known for.
The 2013 vintage supplied a near-ideal stage. A dry winter, an early start, and a long, warm, unbroken season produced small berries with dense skins, and the year now ranks among Napa's most structured and age-worthy of the modern era. In this bottle that means saturated cassis and blackberry, graphite, violet, and cedar over a firm, layered spine built for the long haul. Patience was the vintage's only real demand, as its wines opened slowly and deliberately, and this bottling has followed that script with more than a decade of steady, positive evolution behind it.
Decant generously, at least ninety minutes, if opening soon, and serve with dry-aged beef, lamb, or portobello dishes that meet its density. In a sound cellar it will reward patience well into the 2030s, a serious To Kalon Cabernet from a vintage that students of Napa will debate and admire for decades.
