The 2010 Chateau Branon is a rare micro-production Pessac-Leognan from one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the modern era. Merlot-led and Cabernet Franc-inflected, this tiny Graves estate earned 97 points from Robert Parker for the 2010, placing it among the vintage's elite.
Branon is a boutique property in Leognan revived by the Garcin family, the team behind acclaimed Right Bank estates, who apply the same lavish, detail-obsessed winemaking to this small parcel of Graves gravel. Production is minute and the approach is essentially artisanal, with severe selection and rich, polished elevage yielding a wine of near-garagiste intensity from the historic terroir of Pessac-Leognan. The appellation's deep gravel beds, warmed through the day and freely draining, are the same geological gift that made neighboring Graves estates famous centuries ago.
The 2010 vintage combined drought concentration with cool nights, producing structured, long-lived Bordeaux, and Branon captured it fully: scents of coffee bean, truffle, tobacco and ripe blackberry lead to a big, sweet, smoky palate with mocha depth and a sultry-textured finish. At around 14 percent alcohol, it carries its richness with Graves-born gravelly grounding. Merlot's flesh and Cabernet Franc's floral lift interlock seamlessly, a signature of the family's Right Bank-trained hands, while Cabernet Sauvignon supplies the quiet spine beneath the opulence.
Now past its fifteenth year, it is entering a broad, generous drinking plateau that should run to 2035. Decant thirty minutes and serve with roasted venison, squab, or mushroom-laced beef Wellington. Scarcity, a landmark vintage and top-flight critical validation rarely converge in one bottle; when they do, as here, the wine tends to disappear from cellars far faster than anyone intends.
