The 2006 Glaetzer 'Amon-Ra' Shiraz is a fully mature bottle of Ben Glaetzer's flagship Barossa Valley red, named for the ancient Egyptian sun god. Drawn from ancient vines in the Ebenezer district of the northern Barossa — some more than a century old — this is a rare chance to taste one of Australia's icon Shiraz bottlings with nearly two decades of age.
Ben Glaetzer, of a family whose Barossa winemaking roots reach back to 1888, makes Amon-Ra only from low-yielding old plantings around Ebenezer, where deep red-brown soils and dry-grown vines produce tiny crops of extraordinary intensity. The wine is matured for 16 months in 100 percent new hogshead barrels, predominantly French oak with a touch of American, and bottled unfiltered to preserve every measure of its texture and depth.
The warm, concentrated 2006 Barossa vintage gave Amon-Ra formidable raw material, widely praised on release, and the intervening years have transformed it into something gentler and more complex. Primary blackberry and dark chocolate have evolved toward fruitcake, dried fig, licorice and mocha, with leather, earth and sweet spice emerging on a palate whose once-massive tannins are now velvet-soft. Sediment is natural in a wine of this age and style.
Stand the bottle upright a day before serving, decant gently off its sediment, and pour with slow-roasted beef, aged hard cheeses or simply on its own as a contemplative after-dinner glass. Mature bottles are drinking beautifully now and should hold into the late 2020s. For anyone curious how great Barossa Shiraz ages, this vintage answers eloquently.
