The 2002 Schrader Cellars Double Diamond Mayacamas Range Cabernet Sauvignon is a mountain-grown Sonoma County Cabernet from the early years of Fred Schrader's celebrated Calistoga-based label. Schrader founded his eponymous winery in 1998, after his pioneering run with Colgin-Schrader Cellars in the early 1990s, and quickly became one of the defining names of California's cult Cabernet era. His wines from this period helped define the lavish, small-lot style that dominated collector conversation at the turn of the millennium.

Double Diamond emerged in those formative years as Schrader's companion bottling, offering the house's polished, fruit-saturated style from sources beyond its famed Napa benchland contracts. The Mayacamas Range designation points to high-elevation vineyard land in the mountains dividing Napa and Sonoma, where rocky volcanic soils, thin topsoil, and cool air produce small berries with concentrated flavor and firm natural structure. The bottling gave early admirers of the Schrader style a different lens on it, mountain fruit in place of valley benchland and structure in place of sheer opulence.

More than two decades on, this 2002 has moved from primary exuberance into a classic aged-Cabernet register: cassis and black cherry now wrapped in cedar, tobacco leaf, dried bay, graphite, and sweet earth. Mountain tannin that once gripped has loosened into a firm but polished frame, making this a rewarding study in how early Schrader-era fruit matures.

Decant thirty minutes before dinner and serve with dry-aged beef, lamb chops, or hard aged cheeses to flatter the resolved tannin. Bottles that have rested in proper cellar conditions are drinking at maturity now and should hold their form for several more years. As an artifact of the cult-Cabernet boom's opening chapter, it carries real curiosity value alongside its drinking pleasure.
