The 2000 Chateau Lalande is Saint-Julien without the classified-growth formality, from the vintage that lifted the whole Medoc. This cru bourgeois estate in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle farms about fifteen and a half hectares in a single parcel of gravel, land historically attached to the classified estates Chateau Lagrange and Chateau Saint-Pierre before Gabriel Meffre acquired and separated it in 1964. Its fruit once went into classified-growth blends, which explains the pedigree in the glass.
The vineyard's neighbors read like an honor roll, with Talbot, Lagrange, and Ducru-Beaucaillou adjoining, and its planting is nearly even between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the ripe, structured 2000 season the estate's textbook Saint-Julien profile of dark fruit, graphite, and tobacco gained extra flesh and depth, producing a claret that has aged comfortably into a third decade. Vine age and careful farming, rather than fame, do the work here.
Fully mature now, a sound bottle offers cedar, cassis in its dried register, leather, and earth on a midweight frame with supple, resolved tannins. It is honest, well-placed Bordeaux rather than a collectible, and it delivers the appellation's balance at everyday scale. Note that several Bordeaux properties carry the Lalande name; this is the Saint-Julien estate. For students of terroir it is a useful lesson: the commune's gravel speaks even without a classification attached.
Stand the bottle upright for a day before opening, pour off sediment gently, and serve near 17C. Roast beef, lamb chops, and mushroom dishes suit its savory maturity, and a simple midweek table suits it just as well. Drink now; further keeping adds little, and few appellations offer this much breeding in so unassuming a package.
