Hermitage La Chapelle is the flagship of Paul Jaboulet Aîné, the négociant-grower house founded in 1834, and it takes its name from the small chapel of Saint-Christophe crowning the granite hill above Tain-l'Hermitage. For much of the twentieth century this label defined Northern Rhône Syrah, and the 1961 remains one of the most celebrated wines ever made anywhere. The chapel itself still stands among the vines today.

The wine assembles Syrah from Jaboulet's prime parcels across the hill, led by Le Méal and Les Bessards, where shallow granitic and glacial soils force low yields and deep concentration. Élevage runs in used barrels rather than showy new oak, keeping the emphasis on smoke, black fruit, iron, and the savory, almost austere character that only true Hermitage delivers. Quantities were never large, and properly stored mature examples grow scarcer with every passing season.

The 1998 comes from a strong Northern Rhône vintage, though from a period when the house's own consistency drew sharper scrutiny than its terroir. Critic Jeb Dunnuck rates it 92 points, describing a solid, complex, medium to full-bodied, and fully mature La Chapelle with perfumed Asian spices, dried flowers, ground herbs, and sweet dark fruits in a charming, supple frame.

At more than twenty-five years old this is a wine to drink, not to hold. Stand the bottle upright for a day, decant gently off its sediment, and serve without prolonged aeration; the fruit is delicate now and the pleasures are tertiary — leather, tapenade, pipe tobacco, and warm stone dissolving into a long, quiet finish at the table. A single bottle makes a memorable centerpiece for a dinner built around game, roasted duck, or a simple côte de boeuf.
