The 1983 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva belongs to the rarest tier of Italian wine. From his hillside cellar at Monte Ca' Paletta above Negrar, Giuseppe Quintarelli, revered as the maestro of Amarone, declared a Riserva only in years he deemed truly exceptional, selecting the finest casks from an already minuscule production. Entire decades passed with no Riserva released at all, which makes each declared year an event. Even the standard Amarone leaves this cellar only after extraordinary aging; the Riserva goes further still.

Quintarelli's method was monastic in its patience. Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella dried for months on racks in the winery's ventilated lofts, concentrating sugar and savor before a slow winter fermentation. The young Amarone then rested for roughly a decade in large old casks, emerging only when the maestro judged it complete, a timetable set by taste rather than by any calendar or commercial pressure.

Four decades on, the 1983 Riserva is a meditation wine in the fullest Veneto sense. Anticipate a deep amber-rimmed garnet and unhurried waves of fig, date, black cherry preserve, cocoa, balsam and sweet pipe tobacco, with velvety weight balanced by the bitter-almond twist that keeps Quintarelli's wines profound rather than merely rich, and a finish measured in minutes.

With the estate's hand-scripted label and near-mythic scarcity, this bottle is an ultimate trophy for collectors of the Veneto. Serve it after dinner, with aged hard cheeses or quiet conversation, and give the maestro's slowest work the unhurried evening it deserves, ideally among guests who will remember it for years. Rest it upright for a week beforehand to settle the fine sediment.
