The 1970 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo was raised by Battista Rinaldi in a year of personal significance: he became mayor of the town of Barolo in 1970, an office he held through 1975 and used to secure the Castello di Barolo for the community, the landmark that later housed the regional enoteca. Few bottles so neatly join a family's civic legacy to its winemaking one, and the same hands governed both duties with equal seriousness.
In the cellar nothing changed with civic duty. Nebbiolo from the family's enviable holdings fermented on the skins for weeks and then matured slowly in large, well-seasoned casks, a method the house has never abandoned in more than a century of continuous work. Beppe, the future 'Citrico', was already learning the craft alongside his father by this time, absorbing the convictions he would defend all his life. The results speak the same dialect across every vintage of that era.
The 1970 harvest gave structured, classically proportioned Piedmont reds that have aged with grace. From a sound bottle expect translucent garnet fading to amber, a fragrant weave of potpourri, tar, dried cherry, leather and porcini, and a finely knit palate whose acidity still carries the finish admirably after more than half a century in glass. Handle the cork gently; closures of this era ask for a steady hand and a two-pronged opener.
This is drink-now Barolo of genuine historical resonance, ideal for a vertical alongside the family's other mid-century releases or as a birth-year gift of real gravitas. Decant only briefly, serve cool, and let fifty-plus years of patient chemistry speak entirely for itself at the table.
