Wild Turkey Master's Keep 17 Year Old is an 86.8 Proof (43.4% ABV) Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey produced by the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Released in 2015 as the inaugural expression in the Master's Keep series, this 17-year-old bourbon was created by Master Distiller Eddie Russell and built on the distillery's signature mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley.
The whiskey's defining story is where it slept. Beginning in 1997, with a surplus of bourbon and no warehouse space, Eddie moved barrels into empty stone rickhouses that once belonged to the historic Old Taylor Distillery (now Castle & Key), knowing the stone structures would age the whiskey differently than Wild Turkey's traditional wooden warehouses. After several years in stone, the barrels returned to Wild Turkey's own wooden rickhouses to finish maturing — a journey that gave Master's Keep 17 its uniquely mellow, complex character at a remarkably gentle proof.
It arrived the same year Eddie was promoted to Master Distiller, and many saw the release as a passing of the torch from Jimmy to his son. The Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, is home to one of bourbon's most storied lineages, led for generations by legendary Master Distiller Jimmy Russell — among the longest-tenured master distillers in the world — and his son, Master Distiller Eddie Russell.
