Michter's US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash 2022 is an 86 Proof (43% ABV) small-batch whiskey produced by Michter’s Distillery in Kentucky. As the first return of this expression since 2019, this limited release is crafted from fully matured US-1 Sour Mash, which utilizes a unique grain selection that bridges the profile of bourbon and rye without legally qualifying as either. The base spirit is pulled from fire-charred new American oak barrels before undergoing a secondary maturation in custom-toasted, uncharred casks assembled from 18-month air-dried wood.
Maturation in these specifically toasted barrels has produced a refined profile featuring layers of smoked honey, gingersnap cookies, and milk chocolate. The secondary aging enhances the natural sweetness of the sour mash base, resulting in a silky, approachable mouthfeel and a long finish defined by toasted oak, warm campfire spice, and brandied cherry notes.
